Protagonists sometimes die at the end of a game, but virtually none bite the dust in the first five minutes. So begins the story of Ghost Trick’s Sissel. He takes a blast of rock salt to the chest courtesy of a shady assassin’s golden shotgun. Instead of displaying a “game over” screen, however, Ghost Trick’s poltergeist-style mechanic kicks off.

The girl Sissel was with will be killed as well if he doesn’t do anything, so his spirit must possess any object in the surrounding junkyard to create a distraction and buy her some time. Players can drag his spirit to a nearby railroad arm and bring it down on the villain’s weapon to send it flying. The girl runs away, but the goon catches her again. Next, Sissel inhabits a guitar and makes a strumming sound. The assassin turns around and blasts it, but it’s not enough of a distraction and the girl is caught again. At this point Sissel is out of options – his soul can only reach so far and he’s out of objects. The girl is shot in the back and falls out of frame on the bottom of the screen. The assassin kicks Sissel’s body off the ledge as well and phones in a job well done.

Sissel doesn’t have long to mope as a friendly lamp (think Pixar’s mascot) encourages him to get to the girl’s body. His spirit makes it up to a hospital bed, and by unfolding it he’s able to get to the lamp, which stretches itself out far enough for him to reach the girl. Once he possesses her body, he finds that she was an innocent that wasn’t supposed to die so somehow time rewinds four minutes to just before her murder. This time he’s able to get to bike and ride it towards a switch that drops a massive wrecking ball on the killer.

In action, Ghost Trick is a lot less morbid than it sounds, and the animation is simply stunning. Ace Attorney creator Shu Takumi is behind this project, and his quirky tone is readily apparent. Ghost Trick is still considered a working title at this point and will hit the States after its 2010 Japan release.
